20 Questions with Adam

We are thrilled to introduce our new series on the blog: 20 Questions with...

This is an opportunity to get to know Team Karshare in intimate detail, find out their hopes and dream and learn more about what makes this company so special.

Today we sat down with Adam Newman, our Head of Customer Operations to find out more about what makes him tick.

1. How would you describe what you do for a living to family and friends?

I help communities to provide a solution for that moment when a car is needed. Showing sustainability pioneers that sharing is the way forward. On a day to day basis I help people overcome any hurdles they may encounter when choosing to share a vehicle. I have a great relationship with our community members that gives them peace of mind as we take on new frontiers.

2. What’s one professional skill you’re currently working on?

This is an interesting one – it's a mix for me between critical thinking and time management. Thinking laterally helps me to understand the wider needs of our business and our community. Time management ensures that I have enough time in my day to focus on the 20% that will deliver 80% of the benefit. This is often a challenge in a dynamic work environment but one that I love each and every day.

3. What’s the farthest you’ve ever been from home?

Thailand, touring Bangkok and Chiang Mai

4. How do you prefer to start your day?

I would like to say that I jump out of bed at 0600 every morning for some callisthenics, a 30 minute jog and a fruit smoothie. In reality, I tend to slip out of bed, grab a coffee and slide into the car.

5. How do you prefer to end your day?

I end my day by planning for the next few days ahead. Arranging my to do list and calendar allows me to take charge of my day. We all have the same 24 hours, but you can really see how much time is available if you plan your day.

6. What was your first job?

My first job was as a sales person/porter for a small independent furniture shop in the bus station near where I live.

7. What’s your go-to productivity trick?

Understanding my why. I am most productive if I know the purpose behind what I am trying to achieve, this helps me with even the deepest slog as I know there is a huge benefit at the end of it. We all do things we don’t like and staying positive is really important.

8. What are your pet peeves?

I would like to say nothing and on the whole this is true. I like to think I am a well-balanced and generally accepting and happy person. The one pet peeve I have is when people tell me they don’t have enough time, there is no such thing as not enough time, only priorities. If you want something bad enough you will make it happen.

9. What’s the coolest or most interesting thing you’re working on right now?

Right now I am working on the expansion of Karshare into Manchester. This is a massive milestone for us as a business, and I am really pleased to have been able to see the rise of Karshare from Car & Away to where we are now – truly inspirational!

10. If you could snap your fingers and become an expert in something, what would it be?

Astronomy. I have always been fascinated looking up and wondering what lies beyond the glistening stars and if there really is life beyond our own.

11. If you had to listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

I cannot commit myself to this question, I love a broad spectrum of music – I could never file it down to one song.

12. What’s your most used emoji?

The raised hands emoji 🙌

13. If you could only have three apps on your smartphone, which would you pick?

Does the Google Play Store count as an app? If it does, I will just take that one. Jokes aside: WhatsApp to communicate with my friends and family, my calendar, so I know where I stand each day and Strava, so I can track my road back to fitness

14. Where are you in birth order and do you think it affects your personality?

I am the youngest with three older brothers. I think it does affect my personality – in a positive way. I grew up having to share and understand that everyone views an experience differently, the older I got the more I understood why my older brothers did something in a particular way. This helped me to see the world differently and certainly shaped my understanding. Each of us have a different outlook on life and quite frankly I love meeting new people and hearing their experiences.

15. What trend do you hope makes a comeback?

Platforms, long hair and men in tights!

16. What’s been the most challenging part of your role at Karshare?

I spend a lot of time on the road, which is amazing because I love seeing our customers in person BUT the difficulty is staying away from easy, fast food!

17. What’s your favourite famous or inspirational quote?

"When you talk, you are only repeating what you already know; But when you listen you may learn something new." – Dalai Lama

18. What’s your best memory of working at Karshare?

Every day at Karshare is amazing. Even the not-so-great days offer loads of opportunities to learn. My best memories are when we can really see the gratitude of our customers, you can see how what we are doing benefits the community and it really lights up a spark.

19. What’s something that you’re really good at?

Problem solving!

20. Who do you admire and why?

Arnold Schwarzenegger! He has become a hero of mine, not because he is an enormous body builder, but because he has the mindset to succeed. To get where he is required hard work and dedication, ‘there is no magic pill’ and this can be taken into anything you do in life.

"Roof down, Karshare coat on."
