Renting a car during the Covid-19 pandemic

With the second lockdown of 2020 upon us, anxiety around travel and transport is on the rise.

The UK government has made it clear that this time round, restrictions on travel still permit and encourage us to drive to work or education, visit those in our support or childcare bubbles, attend medical appointments, buy goods and services from retailers and travel to outdoor spaces for exercise.

For those households without a car, this can be a challenging time. Public transport services are reduced with longer travel times due to social distancing measures. The risk of transmission remains high in enclosed spaces where less than 2m distance can be maintained. Outdoor modes of transport such as walking or cycling are increasingly difficult as the temperature drops and we head for wintery weather.

The solution, however, does not lie in purchasing a brand-spanking new car to help your household get around during lockdown or avoiding travel altogether. With every new car that’s produced, we’re adding an extra 127.9g of CO2 per kilometre to the planet while those cars already parked on our roads sit idle approximately 95% of the time.

We believe there’s a better way…

Karshare’s modus operandi is simple: we enable car owners to share their cars with people who need one. This community car sharing concept allows anyone in need of a car to access our platform, find a nearby vehicle and book it instantly - there are no counters, no queues and, most importantly during these times, no contact!

Our entire booking process is contactless and done through our app, meaning that there is never a need for a car owner to meet with the renter to hand over the car keys. In fact, the car owner doesn’t even need to be in the same country as their car when it is rented out. This is achieved through our pioneering KarshareGo technology, a keyless system which is installed in every car on our platform to allow car renters to safely unlock their booked vehicle with our app.

It goes without saying that the safety of our owners and renters is our utmost priority, so we are taking extra precautions to ensure that our community can use our service with confidence during the Covid-19 health crisis.

Aside from our contactless check-in and unlocking process, which drastically reduces the risk of transmission, we also require all car owners to clean and sanitise their vehicles before every rental. Karshare provides sanitisation kits and clear instructions to all car owners, which remain in the car for renters to use before and after their booking. These kits include Ramsol antibacterial spray, proven to protect against the coronavirus, gloves, hand sanitiser and antibacterial wipes.
