What age do you have to be to rent a car?

Car rental for drivers under 25

One of the questions that gets asked frequently with new renters here at Karshare is how old drivers have to be to rent a car on our platform.

How old do I have to be to rent a car?

Drivers renting a car with Karshare need to be aged 21 and above. Drivers between 21 and 25 need to have zero points on their licence in order to be eligible to rent. So for those newly qualified drivers you’ll need to wait a couple more years before we can accept your bookings.

Can I rent a car at 18?

While we seek to provide a seamless experience for drivers renting cars, minimising risk and providing a trusted and secure service for the car owners who share their cars with Karshare is really important to us. It’s because of this that the minimum age to rent a car is 21 years.

Do I have to pay extra if I'm under 25?

Some other car rental companies charge a daily fee of up to £30 for younger drivers which significantly increases the total rental cost. At Karshare if you are between the ages of 21-25 with no points on your licence you’ll be happy to learn that Karshare doesn’t charge these fees. You can go ahead and take advantage of our low daily hire and market beating rental costs without worrying about any hidden extras.

How long do I need to have held a driving licence?

All renters need to have held a driving licence for at least two years, issued in the UK, EU, EEA, Australia*, Canada*, Monaco, Switzerland, Jersey, Guernsey or Isle of Man.

*Renters with Australian and Canadian licences must be aged between 25-70.
