Karshare launches in Coventry as part of Mobility Credits Scheme trial

Transport for West Midlands has introduced a new service to their Mobility Credits Scheme, enabling Coventry locals to take part in peer-to-peer car sharing through Karshare.

The Mobility Credits Scheme is an initiative to encourage people to scrap their old car in exchange for £3,000 of Mobility Credits to be used on public transport, e-scooters, bike hire, car rental and now peer-to-peer car sharing.

The Karshare platform gives those who have a vehicle that doesn’t qualify for the Mobility Credits trial the opportunity to still participate in the initiative and make a positive, green contribution to Coventry by making their vehicle available to rent by carefully vetted drivers.

According to CoMoUK, every car sharing service displaces 10.5 private cars and defers 12 private car purchases meaning there are less vehicles on the road, easing both congestion and reducing CO2 emissions.

Car owners in Coventry can now sign up to share their car on Karshare ahead of May, when vehicles will be made available to hire. Owners earn money from sharing their vehicle while renters know that their payments go directly to people within their community. The intention is to offer a wide range of cars and vans available to book on-demand on hourly or daily rates.

Karshare’s scheme has its own eligibility criteria, but is widely open to fuel efficient cars under 13 years old.

Graeme Banister, Mobility & Partnerships Director at Karshare, said; “We are delighted to be involved in the Mobility Credits initiative and bring community car sharing to Coventry. We very much look forward to growing a community of owners and renters in Coventry and playing our part in supporting the efforts being made by TfWM and Coventry City Council to deliver more sustainable travel options.”

Car sharing is one of a number of different public and sustainable transport options being promoted in Coventry as part of the Mobility Credits Scheme. Eligibility criteria and more information can be found on the Mobility Credits page on Coventry City Council’s website: www.coventry.gov.uk/mobilitycredits
