Guide to renting a car in the winter

What to expect when renting in the winter

So you're planning on renting a car during winter? We've highlighted a few key tips to make sure your car rental goes as smoothly as possible, even if you do get caught out by some bad weather.

Leave extra time for de-icing or bring an ice-scraper

You may arrive to your rental car to find that the windows have frozen over. The owner of the vehicle might've left an ice-scraper or some de-icer in the car, but if that isn't the case then don't worry. This method will take a bit longer, but you can heat the car up and wait for it to defrost gradually. Don't attempt to clear the snow or ice with your windscreen wipers as this may cause damage to the car. Don't pour boiling water on the screen either, as this can crack the windscreen due to the sudden change in temperature.

Run these checks on the car

Although the car owners choosing to share their car will perform checks on their vehicles before each rental, it's worth double checking the following before you set off on your journey.

Has the car got enough fuel?

It's simple, but effective! The last thing you'd want is to be stranded in the cold with no fuel. Leave extra time for your journey in case you need to find a petrol station on the way. Remember, if you return the car with more fuel than when you picked it up, you'll have the cost of that fuel refunded to you.

Are the windscreen wipers working?

This is important, especially if you're going to be driving in snow or icy sleet conditions!

Are the lights working?

Check all the lights are as they should be and see if they need a wipe down to improve visibility. In the fog and dark nights, you're going to need them!

Drive responsibly

We know that those who rent with Karshare are good drivers thanks to our driver telematics, but if you happen to get caught in some less desirable weather situations while you're on the road, just be sensible. Stick to the speed limits, keep your distance to the car in front, accelerate gently, use your fog lights and take breaks - driving in bad weather can be tiring!

Bring a charging cable for your phone

We always recommend that you have a fully charged phone before a Karshare rental, as your phone becomes the key to locking and unlocking the car. However, in the winter this is even more important due to the increased risk of a breakdown and you might need your phone to call RAC.

Keep these breakdown details to hand

If the car you've rented breaks down while you are out on the road, our breakdown partners RAC will be on hand to help you out. Simply call the RAC on 0330 2000 999 and quote the following word: Karshare02. You'll then need to provide the car's reg number, your name and DOB. Once you've done so, someone will be on their way to help you.

Don't forget that all rentals are fully covered by our insurance policy, and that we're on hand to keep you safe should the need arise.

Please feel free to call us at any time (+44 (0) 208-051-4920) if you are unsure of what to do and would like some assistance.
