Electric vehicles – bringing spark(le) to sharing

In a previous blog post, we covered how car sharing has been highlighted by the World Economic Forum as a way of life the world must embrace to help tackle climate change.

In the UK, transport is the highest contributor to CO2 emissions – car sharing, and making do with fewer vehicles, is not a silver bullet but an important part of the solution to creating a more sustainable future.

Alongside the growth in sharing, the move away from petrol and diesel vehicles to electric power is accelerating. In the UK, the announcement last year that the sale of new petrol and diesel cars will be banned by 2030 was a truly significant moment.

In 2020, the market share of these newer vehicles grew threefold from 3.2% to 10.7%. The forecast for new car sales in 2021 moves the share to almost one in five; truly electrifying!

That said, more innovation is needed to support people in making the move to electric sooner. Electric vehicles, still a fairly new technology, are typically more expensive than their combustion engine alternatives, so it is understandable that many will hold off on making the change until it becomes more affordable.

But it doesn’t have to be that way. Karshare is working hard to help more people make the move to a more sustainable future sooner through Lease and Share, a mechanism to deliver fewer AND newer vehicles.

Our Lease and Share service is an innovative way to access a new vehicle that comes with sharing permissions. Use the vehicle as you need it and when it’s not in use, share it with others in your community. That way, your car can start paying for itself!

Karshare is creating partnerships with suppliers that can offer access to vehicles on monthly arrangements, both rolling monthly agreements or longer-term contracts starting from 24 months.

The interest in electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles is clear with 40% of our enquiries received since launching at the end of 2020 focusing on this newer technology. Electric vehicles typically cost £100-150 more a month to lease so the logic of offsetting this cost by sharing with others is a great benefit. Plus, with car sharing, there is the potential to earn more than the additional cost and in this way allow someone to actually reduce their cost of motoring.
